What I learned from Keller before he got up to speak last night

17 11 2009

So Dr. Timothy Keller, (the patron saint of all young reformed dudes), was here in Louisville last night. Naturally, I dropped what I was doing and went like any good fan would.

With the hopes of getting something on video for the ol’ blog, I tried to find him or “his people” to see if he would give me a 5 minute interview.

Out of the blue, I ran into him in the hall. Thankfully, neither of us was injured.

I thanked him for his ministry and impact on me and our crew and made the ask. Expectedly, he couldn’t do it. The schedule was too tight. But in the brief exchange, I learned a couple of things I want to pass on.

1. Never be afraid to ask difficult questions.

Now, granted, eternity didn’t hang in the balance over whether or not he appeared on this blog. But sometimes it does. And we need to not just know it but feel it.

Who are those people in your life that you need to ask some difficult questions about their souls? Their marriages? Their finances? Gospel up and do it for God’s glory and their good.

2. Know your limits.
Keller could tell I wasn’t a psycho. He knew I meant well. (It was the special kinship all bald men share.) But he also knew he is on a book tour, had to sign books after he spoke and he had to get some rest for the road ahead.

Do you know your limits? Or are you continuing to pile things on your plate until they fall off? Be careful. Your whole plate can break. Click here if you want to read my own story about it.

So the next time you see Tim Keller, he won’t be thinking about me.

But I hope you might. And I hope you remember what I learned.

More posts and videos coming soon.

Is Tim Keller your idol?

No, but that is a great question. Sad to say, my idols are typically not people but other things. Pray that I repent continually and turn to Jesus. I do think this is a problem in our generation though. That’s part of why I asked Chandler about it. AND Stetzer has some great things to say about it in my interview with him that drops on Monday. Stay tuned. Thanks for reading.
